Eddie Vedder brought his tour in support of the recently released Earthling album to Seattle for the second of two hometown concerts last night. The Pearl Jam frontman took a few moments early in the concert at Benaroya Hall to pay tribute to famed grunge musician Mark Lanegan just hours after the Screaming Trees co-founder’s death was announced.

Mark Lanegan 1964 – 2022
Mark Lanegan of the influential grunge band Screaming Trees and an acclaimed solo performer has died at age 57.
Vedder opened Tuesday’s concert with covers of R.E.M.’s “Drive” and “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles. Eddie then addressed the crowd. “I got here about four o’clock and all of the sudden my body started shaking a little bit and I started to feel really terrible and I think it was because I was having an allergic reaction to sadness because we lost a guy called Mark Lanegan,” Vedder said. “Some people know Seattle because of the musicians that have come out of the great Northwest. Some of those guys were one of a kind singers. Mark was certainly that with such a strong voice.
“It’s hard to come to terms, at least at this point. He’s going to be deeply missed and at least we’ll always have his voice to listen to and his words and his books to read. He wrote two incredible books in the last few years,” Eddie added. “I just wanted to process it and put it out there and let his wife and loved ones know that people in his old stomping grounds have been thinking about him and we love him.” Vedder and his Earthlings band then performed “Tender Mercies.”
Mark Lanegan co-founded influential grunge band Screaming Trees and went on to have an acclaimed solo career. Lanegan died on Tuesday at age 57. A cause of death has yet to be revealed.
Eddie’s Earthlings band features guitarist/vocalist Glen Hansard, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, former RHCP and current Pearl Jam touring multi-instrumentalist Josh Klinghoffer, bassist Chris Chaney and guitarist Andrew Watt. The ensemble delivered a 22-song performance last night that included eight tunes from Earthling, an assortment of choice covers and a few Pearl Jam classics.
Vedder’s daughters, Harper Vedder and Olivia Vedder, both made guest appearances on Tuesday. Harper joined the band for Earthling track “Long Way,” while Olivia fronted the group on “My Father’s Daughter” from the soundtrack to Sean Penn’s Flag Day film. Olivia and Harper returned to the stage for Eddie Vedder & The Earthlings’ cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World” that ended the evening.
