Umphrey’s McGee kicked off a two-night run at ExploreAsheville.Com Arena in Asheville, North Carolina on Friday. The band dusted off Metallica’s “…And Justice For All” for the encore.
UM got the show underway with a three-song seamless section beginning with a pair of instrumentals “You Got The Wrong Guy” and “Get In The Van” and capped off with “The Floor.” A coupling of classics “Uncommon” and an expansive “2×2,” which contained a jam on David Bowie’s “Fame,” followed. Next up, recently released UM single “I Don’t Know What I Want” proceeded a pairing of “All In Time” and “We’re Going To War.” “Believe The Lie” brought the first frame to a close.
Umphrey’s kicked off the five-song second set with a 16-minute “40s Theme” followed by the reggae-tinged “Higgins,” which stretched to over 14 minutes. Staple “JaJunk” then led into “Mail Package.” The classic “In The Kitchen” then prefaced a return to “JaJunk” to close out the second set. UM returned to the stage to encore with a bust out of Metallica’s “…And Justice For All,” last time played on March 6, 2020 in Aspen, Colorado for a total gap of 81 shows, as per All Things Umphreys.
While the cover was in fairly heavy rotation in the mid 2000s, it became a rarity in the teens with the Asheville 2022 version marking just the fifth rendition since 2013. Drummer Kris Myers provided the rhythmic foundation for the sprawling title track to Metallica’s 1988 album with guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss reeling off the song’s prog-metal harmonies before Myers took over to sing the song’s lyrics. “..And Justice For All” capped off the evening.
