Mark Lanegan, co-founder of the highly influential grunge band Screaming Trees, sadly died on February 22. He was just 57 years old. In honor of Lanegan, JamBase takes a look at a Lanegan performance with Queens of the Stone Age in 2002 for this edition of Sunday Cinema.
After Screaming Trees disbanded in 2000, Lanegan joined Queens Of The Stone Age, led by guitarist Josh Homme, for their second studio album Rated R. He also worked with the band on their 2002 LP, Songs For The Deaf, which featured Dave Grohl on drums and was the last QOTSA record to contain contributions from Nick Oliveri on bass.
Songs For The Deaf arrived on August 27, 2002. Two months earlier QOTSA — featuring the lineup of Homme, Lanegan, Oliveri, Grohl and multi-instrumentalist Troy Van Leeuwen — performed at Mean Fiddler in London on June 25, 2002. The concert featured a mix of songs from QOTSA’s first three albums including the Lanegan co-penned “Song For The Dead,” which came about halfway through the set. The tune kicked off with some beastly fills from Grohl before Lanegan led the group through the thrasher.
