Goose opened up their two-night, winter tour closing run at The Fillmore Philadelphia on Friday night. The Connecticut quintet delivered two big set opening jams along with a Nina Simone cover and more.
Goose went for a long drive to kick off the show, stretching the groove number out to nearly 22 minutes. Next, the band then begged the question, “Earthling or Alien?” ahead of “Indian River.” “Time To Flee” then followed ahead “Jive I.” Goose wrapped up the first frame with their cover of the Nina Simone-recorded “Sinnerman.”
The quintet got the second set underway with “Pancakes.” Goose recently debuted the song from keyboardist/guitarist Peter Anspach’s Great Blue project in San Diego. Peter led the band through the tune before they explored a version that surpassed the 20-minute mark. Next up, Goose paired the favorite “Slow Ready” with the Ted Tapes jam “Moby.”
Anspach then presided over Run DMC’s “Ghostbusters Rap” from the Ghostbusters II soundtrack. The funky, clavinet-laced number also contained a percussion breakdown from Jeffrey Arevalo before the band dropped back into the groove ahead of exploring a dub jam. “Arise” counted as the penultimate song of the second set before Goose served up a 20-minute “Hot Tea” to close the frame. The quintet returned to kick off the encore with “Creatures” which led into the Animal House soundtrack number “Shama Lama Ding Dong” to cap off the evening.
