Bob Weir Completes Solo Acoustic ‘Dark Star’ In Asheville & Gives Lesson For HeadCount

63

Bob Weir kicked off last night’s Bob Weir and Wolf Bros concert in Asheville, North Carolina by finishing the solo “Dark Star” he began on Monday in Columbus. Weir returned to the stage after a few days off during which he gave his first-ever guitar lesson to the winner of an online promotion for HeadCount put together by Fandiem.

The guitarist went it alone to start Thursday’s show at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium with the resumption of “Dark Star,” including the song’s second verse. Bobby was then joined by the full ensemble featuring bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless and the Wolfpack string and horn section for a “Bird Song” that gave way to “Good Morning, School Girl” sans Wolfpack.

Bob Weir & Wolf Bros looked to the Jerry Garcia live repertoire next for the Bob McDill and Allen Reynolds co-write “Catfish John.” Sless and Chimenti then vacated the stage leaving the original trio to cover Marty Robbins’ “El Paso.” Next, the Wolfpack, Barry and Jeff came back out for “Mexicali Blues” and “Black-Throated Wind” before the core quintet closed the set with “Casey Jones.”

Weir, Was, Lane, Chimenti and Sless opened last night’s second set with Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee” featuring Bobby on acoustic. The Wolfpack returned for the rest of a frame that continued with the traditional New Orleans song “Iko Iko” and Hunter/Garcia classic “New Speedway Boogie.” From there the 10 musicians slipped “The Other One” into “Eternity” and delivered the beloved “China Cat Sunflower”/”I Know You Rider” suite. Bobby led the troupe through “Morning Dew” to cap the set. The band covered Bob Dylan’s “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” as the evening’s encore.

As previously mentioned, Bobby taught his first guitar lesson earlier this week. The lesson won by Jason E. of Palmetto, Florida took place virtually using the Lively platform. Jason E. also won a D’Angelico guitar autographed by Weir as part of a promotion which raised over $30K for HeadCount. Bob Weir is a founding board member of HeadCount, an organization that promotes voter registration and participation in democracy through the power of music.
