Jay Lane Dedicates Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Durham Concert To Taylor Hawkins

71

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros continued their 2022 spring tour in Durham, North Carolina on Saturday. Drummer Jay Lane dedicated the concert to Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins who sadly died on Friday.

Bob Weir & Wolf Bros kicked things off with “The Music Never Stopped” with The Wolf Pack horn and string section — cellist Alex Kelly, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown — in tow. The full ensemble then headed into “Easy Answers” and a return to “TMNS” to cap off the opening segment. Guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Jay Lane, bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel player Barry Sless would then go it alone for Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and Johnny Cash’s “Big River.”

Weir then delivered his solo segment of the show which began with Bobby strumming out some chords on his acoustic before saying, “Shit,” to rapturous applause. “I’m currently working on a tune. I think I might play a little of it. It’s not done yet.” Bobby did indeed play a little of what was marked as “She Knows What I’m Thinkin” on his setlist, a song with some great lyrics (“Let the darkness shine”) and a blues-tinge to it, before saying, “I don’t remember any more of the verses,” once again getting a huge rise out of the audience. Bobby then headed into the traditional “K.C. Moan” to wrap up the solo section. The full ensemble including The Wolf Pack returned for Bobby’s collab with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, “Corrina,” before wrapping up the first frame with the classic Bobby-led Dead pairing of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance.”

The second set got underway with the quintet delivering another Dead classic, “Friend Of The Devil” followed by the GD-covered standard “Women Are Smarter.” The Wolf Pack then joined in for the Bobby ballad “Looks Like Rain.” Next, the full ensemble then took “Eyes Of The World” into the title track to the Marvin Gaye masterpiece What’s Going On ahead of a return to “Eyes.” The second Dylan song of the night came in the form of “All Along The Watchtower” before The Wolf Pack returned to help close out the second set with “Stela Blue” and “One More Saturday Night.”

As the full ensemble returned for the encore, Jay Lane took the mic and paid tribute to fellow drummer Taylor Hawkins. “I want to dedicate this show to Taylor Hawkins from the Foo Fighters,” he said. “Check it out, that motherfucker started with the Foo Fighters the same year I started with Weir. It’s been that fucking long. I really feel for the cat, man. And Taylor, thank you man. Thank you for your inspiration. We love you.” The band then delivered the poignant “Brokedown Palace” to bring the evening to a close.
