The Dean Ween Group featuring Ween guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo ended 2018 with a co-headlining New Year’s Eve show that also included Dumpstaphunk at Cervantes’ in Denver. Deaner and his band fit three Funkadelic covers into their set. In addition, Melchiondo helped Dumpstaphunk ring in 2019.
Deaner was joined by guitarist/vocalist Bill Fowler, guitarist Michael “Kidd Funkadelic” Hampton of Funkadelic fame, Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz and drummer Sim Cain. The Dean Ween Group focused on a mix of material from 2016’s The Deaner Album including “Exercise Man,” “Garry” and “Doo Doo Chasers” as well as gems from 2018’s rock2 such as “Fingerbangin’,” “The Ritz Carlton” and “Sunset Over Belmar.”
The band made good use of Hampton by performing “Red Hot Mama” early in the set and later tackling Funkadelic classics “Cosmic Slop” and “Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On.” Deaner and his crew ended their portion of the night with a take on Ween’s “The Rift.” Listen to an audience recording of The Dean Ween Group’s set taped by Mike B.:
Dean Ween and Michael Hampton joined Dumpstaphunk to begin 2019 with covers of Parliament’s “Up For The Down Stroke” and “Unfunky UFO.” Watch video of the collaboration shared by Dumpstaphunk:
