Trey Anastasio Teases Fast ‘Lawn Boy’ At Solo Acoustic Concert In Louisville

63

Trey Anastasio delivered a solo acoustic show at the Iroquois Amphitheatre in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday. The Phish guitarist showed what a fast “Lawn Boy” might sound like and also debuted the title track to his 2022 acoustic album Mercy in his solo format.

Trey got things underway with “Sample In A Jar” after which he chuckled a bit and addressed the Louisville audience. Following an explanation of why he was laughing, Anastasio walked into the slowed-down countrified version of “Water In The Sky,” after which someone in the crowd yelled “keep coming to Louisville” to which Trey replied, “it’s too infrequent,” before adding: “I did a little assessment when I was backstage. I assessed! And I realized that…the last time Phish played in Louisville was 1995.” The audience showered the guitarist with cheers and applause to which he replied, “Were you guys all there?”

Trey went on to recall that the last time Phish played in Louisville was when his daughter Eliza was two months old and noted that she is turning 27 in August. “So what else has happened since the last time we played in Louisville?” the guitarist queried. “Let’s see, well, I survived a plague and a pandemic, the bubonic plague at Dick’s. Went to jail, got out of jail, all that happened. Incarcerated. Freed. And now we’re back, here we are…so much has happened, which really gets you thinking: what’s gonna happen between now and the next time? Hopefully it won’t be that long.”

Trey continued on with “Theme From The Bottom” and “Limb By Limb” before dedicating “Snowflakes In The Sand” to Eliza. He then told a story about accidentally flooding Eliza’s apartment the last time he saw her before heading out on the road. “Worst dad ever,” he said. “So hopefully I can make it up to her.” When someone shouted something about Father’s Day on Sunday, Trey said, “Actually I’ll redo this dedication to all the fathers of young daughters. Hopefully you can relate to this one.” Anastasio then delivered “Snowflakes In The Sand.”

Next came “Brain And Robert,” prior to which someone yelled “slow ‘Sparkle,’” Phish recently unveiled a slow “Maze” in Indiana, to which Anastasio replied “fast ‘Lawn Boy.’” Trey then vamped on a fast “Lawn Boy” and was pleased with the result but said he would save it for “the boys.”

Along with Phish tunes including “Blaze On,” “Shade” and “Ghost,” Trey also offered solo acoustic gems like the instrumental “The Inlaw Josie Wales,” “Mountains In The Mist” and “Summer Of 89.” After the latter, Anastasio unveiled “Mercy,” which is the title track to his 2022 debut solo acoustic album. Trey dedicated the rest of the main set mostly to Phish classics like “Chalk Dust Torture,” “Bathtub Gin,” “The Lizards” and “Twist,” which headed into set closer “Everything’s Right.”

Anastasio kicked off a five-song encore with “Back On The Train.” “A Life Beyond The Dream” then flowed into “Backwards Down The Number Line” and “Carini.” After the latter, Trey revealed that he likes it when fans “woo” before thanking the audience one last time and expressing his love for Kentucky which he said reminds him of Vermont. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Anastasio said before closing out the evening with “More.” Anastasio heads to Cincinnati tonight.

[1] Trey solo acoustic.

[2] Trey solo acoustic; first acoustic performance.

This entire show was performed by Trey solo acoustic and featured the first acoustic performance of Mercy. Prior to Brian and Robert, a fan in the audience shouted out “Slow Sparkle” (Phish had played a slowed down Maze earlier in the month) to which Trey responded “Fast Lawn Boy.” Trey then briefly sang and played parts of Lawn Boy at a fast tempo before saying he was going to save that one for when the “boys” come back and that they’d speed up Lawn Boy.
