Dead & Company Busts Out ‘Box Of Rain’ In St. Louis

67

Dead & Company’s Summer Tour 2022 continued Tuesday with a concert at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater just outside St. Louis. The band began the second set with their sixth performance of the Grateful Dead favorite “Box Of Rain,” which they last performed live in 2019.

When guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bassist Oteil Burbridge took the stage in Maryland Heights, Missouri, the temperature was a sweltering 96°F. The band selected “The Music Never Stopped” to open the first set, Weir delivering the on-point “Too hot to even speak now” lyrics. Trips to two U.S. states followed as Mayer led a charge through “Alabama Getaway” and Weir helmed the prevailing “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.”

The cross-country journey continued with “Jack Straw” and its references to Tulsa, Wichita, Santa Fe and Texas. The rarely played “Easy Wind” – one of two Grateful Dead songs written entirely by lyricist Robert Hunter, which was sung by Ron “Pigpen” McKernan – saw Mayer noting more U.S. geography with its lyrics mentioning the great highway and the bayou.

Dead & Co. stayed on the geographical and wind themes with Weir’s lamenting “Black-Throated Wind,” which drew a cheer from the crowd when Bobby delivered the “I left St. Louis, the City of Blues” verse of the song. The set closer was a sweetly jammed “Bird Song.”

“Box Of Rain” opened Tuesday’s second set. The song, written by Hunter and Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, was last played by Dead & Company on July 5, 2019. Mayer handled lead vocals on the American Beauty sing-along that opened a second set for the third time.

The unexpected opener was followed by “Scarlet Begonias” featuring Mayer showing off his upper vocal range. The arrival of the frequent “Scarlet” partner “Fire On The Mountain” would have to wait as Dead & Co. instead went back-to-back with band songs, exploring jammed-out takes on “Playing In The Band” and “Uncle John’s Band.” The “Playing In The Uncle John’s Band” combination led to the belated appearance of “Fire On The Mountain,” which was the lone song on the setlist to feature Burbridge singing lead.

The “Fire” jam was a precursor to the night’s free-form “Drums” segment. Hart and Burbridge initiated the percussive improvisation. Kreutzmann soon joined in and the trio banged away on the impressive array of drums at their disposal. Hart shifted to his Beam and Burbridge picked up his bass for a deeply psychedelic duo drone exercise that ushered in the “Space” improvisation as the full band eventually came back onstage.

The second part of the second set started with “Spanish Jam” emerging out of “Space.” The instrumental based on a passage from Miles Davis’ Sketches Of Spain, “Spanish Jam” has been played just a few times by Dead & Co. Mayer then steered a segue into “Hell In A Bucket.”

“Black Peter,” a song written by Hunter and Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia that appeared on Workingman’s Dead, took the set into a mournful, reflective place. The second set ended with another song with some geography in its lyrics and title, “U.S. Blues.” The encore was a fully electric rendition of the beauty off of American Beauty, “Ripple.”
