Surviving Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown will reunite for their first tour together since the band’s 2003 breakup, per Billboard. Details of the 2023 tour, including who will replace late founding brothers Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums) as well as specific dates, have yet to be announced.
Billboard reports that Anselmo and Brown signed on with Artist Group International to book the upcoming North American tour dates. “We are thrilled to be working with such an iconic band and bringing their music back to the fans,” agent Peter Pappalardo said in a statement.
Rumors of a reunion tour with guitarist Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) filling in for Darrell—who was murdered onstage in Columbus, OH in 2004 during a show with Damageplan—have circulated for years, dating back to 2014 when he and Anselmo performed Pantera’s “I’m Broken” during Down’s tour with Black Label Society. Prior to his death in 2018 from heart disease, Vinnie Paul was dismissive of any reunion tour prospects as he still harbored resentments against Anselmo for derogatory comments he made in a magazine article about Darrell shortly before his death. The drummer and vocalist remained on non-speaking terms until the former’s death, something Anselmo regrets.
“The last thing on my mind, before all this happened, was really playing Pantera songs,” Anselmo told Humo Negro, “And then Vince died. And then it was, like, ‘F**k, man.’ Things got important.”
