Phish Tour 2022: Jones Beach Night 2 – Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

70

Phish capped a two-night run at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater with a show on Wednesday at the venue in Wantagh, New York just a few miles from New York City. The setlist saw both sets feature the return of two songs not performed since their debut at last Halloween’s Sci-Fi Soldier set. Both sets also incorporated decisive, quick-to-deliver improvisation with favorable results.

Bassist Mike Gordon got the call to start the show with “Mike’s Song,” marking the vintage original’s 35th time holding down the opener slot. Instead of taking the “Mike’s” jam into a familiar segue, the band instead surprisingly picked up “Wolman’s Brother,” marking the first such pairing of the pair of possessively titled songs.

The “Wolfman’s Brother” jam started out in typical effervescent fashion before taking a decidedly sharp turn, first angular and darting and then focused and rocking and finally settled and mellowed. Page McConnell worked in a variety of sounds from his array of keyboards while guitarist Trey Anastasio alternated between assertive soloing and steady rhythm work. Trey cycled a looping tone that led to Gordon getting called upon again, this time leading a cover of “Ya Mar.”

A blustery “46 Days” followed and turned out a sharp jam, pummeling forward for several fervent minutes. A fun and pretty well-executed “It’s Ice” kept the set skating along. Trey then pulled out the tender “All Of These Dreams” as the Round Room rarity made its 13th setlist since debuting in 2003.

Another somewhat different kind of rarity was then played as “Something Living Here” made its second appearance since its debut as part of the Sci-Fi Soldier Halloween set last year in Las Vegas. Wednesday’s unexpected resurfacing proved the song might have some lasting qualities not yet fully explored.

“Axilla II” came bolting out of its typically vibrant start. The band effortlessly juxtaposed the blistering beginning of the song with its drowsy ending. Trey jokingly called out Chris Kuroda during the “Don’t shine that light in my face, man,” lyrics letting the lighting director know that he could shine the light in his face in honor of Tuesday being Kuroda’s birthday.

The somewhat scarcely played “When The Circus Comes To Town” by Los Lobos was brought out for the second time this summer. The set closer was the well-worn original “Run Like An Antelope.” Drummer Jon Fishman rolled through the various sounds on his sampling pad at the onset and dropped them in occasionally for the rest of the song.

More Skinny

“No Men In No Man’s Land” got the second set off to a cheery start. The successive jam “NMINML” ushered in was one of those almost self-propelled excursions where it seems like the four musicians were playing downhill, progressing from one distinct sequence to the next. The blissed-out, harmonic elements wove together for several appealing minutes of improvisation.

Gordon’s murking rumbling that signals the start of “Down With Disease” arose from successful jamming and was a short respite before the foursome dove back into another intricately developed jam. Trey hit on a couple of sustained melodic riffs that established the foundation of the first part of the jam but soon the quartet went into the full-on free-form ambient space realm.

Once they reached the outer confines of space, a second Sci-Fi Soldier song not played since Halloween made its second appearance as “Don’t Doubt Me” saw Trey and Fish volleying its verses. The funky rocker with some instantly memorable lyrics (“But he’s a genuine asshole,” “Un-head the knee”) dissolved with ease into TV On The Radio’s “Golden Age.”

Played at a loping pace, the at-times frenzied cover took on a laid-back, easy vibe on Wednesday night. As they opened the jam, Trey’s nimble playing and Page’s soothing organ work blanketed the audience in a sweet soundscape. Fish then initiated a faster pace as the band looked for a new direction to turn, but never were able to find fertile or particularly firm ground. What did end up taking hold was the sentimental Hoist ballad “Lifeboy.”

“Fluffhead” then arrived in Wantagh, getting a cheer from the crowd when Trey enthusiastically sang the “Fluff came to New York” lyrics. The multi-part suite was further enthusiastically processed until reaching a satisfying conclusion. Making the show into one long “Mike’s Groove,” the band punctuated the second set with “Weekapaug Groove,” which galloped along to an energetic conclusion.

The encore was a standalone “Slave To The Traffic Light,” which saw Trey come in early on one of the verses but successfully laugh his way back on track. Phish tour continues Friday with a show in Raleigh, North Carolina. Livestreams are available via LivePhish.com.
