The Mountain Goats released the new single “Mark On You.” The track is featured on the band’s upcoming album, Bleed Out, due out on August 19 through Merge Records.
The 12-track follow-up to 2021’s Dark In Here was produced by Bully’s Alicia Bognanno. Bandleader John Darnielle was inspired by the many pulpy actions movies he watched while locked down at home towards the start of the pandemic to pen the material on Bleed Out. The Mountain Goats previously previewed the LP with singles “Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome” and “Training Montage.”
“‘Mark on You’ was the point where I knew where I was going in the writing of the album: songs with physical situations and palpable threats, something visceral for the tail end of lockdown,” explained Darnielle of the new single. “Producer Alicia Bognanno ran wild on this one, one of the first ones I sent her; she shapes the sound with an intensely sick riff over the chorus, teasing out the extensions and expanding the blasting surface.”
