Wilco brought out old friend Jason Isbell during their Sunday set at the 2022 Beach Road Weekend festival. Isbell emerged towards the end of Wilco’s performance to guest on “California Stars.”
Beach Road Weekend was held in Veteran’s Memorial Park on Martha’s Vineyard from Friday, August 26 through Sunday, August 28. Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit closed out the action on The Black Dog Stage yesterday before Wilco headlined the Lighthouse Stage. Isbell previously joined Wilco for “California Stars” a number of times, including at Minneapolis’ Basilica Block Party in 2015 and at the Mountain Jam festival in 2016.
Jeff Tweedy welcomed Isbell to the stage 13 songs into Wilco’s Beach Road Weekend set. Tweedy handled lead vocals and played acoustic guitar on “California Stars,” a song featuring lyrics by Woody Guthrie that Wilco recorded with Billy Bragg for their collaborative 1998 album, Mermaid Avenue. Jason Isbell took a solo and engaged in a duel with Wilco lead guitarist Nels Cline towards the end of the song.

Wilco arrived at Beach Road Weekend hot off Tweedy and Cline’s participation in the Philco performance with Phil Lesh & Friends at Sacred Rose near Chicago on Friday. The sextet is touring in support of their recently released studio album, Cruel Country.
Six Cruel Country songs made Wilco’s Beach Road Weekend setlist: “I Am My Mother,” its title track, “Hints,” “Story To Tell,” “Bird Without A Tail/Base Of My Skull” and “Falling Apart (Right Now).” Tweedy and his bandmates also worked plenty of classics into the mix with “Handshake Drugs” opening and “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” bringing the performance to a close. Staples “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” “Via Chicago,” “Hummingbird,” “Impossible Germany” and “Box Full Of Letters” were also among the songs played by Wilco on Sunday.
