Joe Russo’s Almost Dead delivered a two-night stand at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavillion on Friday and Saturday. Night one saw a full-show sit-in from saxophonist/flutist Stuart Bogie as well as Tom Hamilton playing Jerry Garcia’s Wolf guitar, while night two boasted stellar jams on epics from the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd.
JRAD got the show underway on Friday with a breezy jam which gained momentum and surged into “The Wheel,” with Bogie taking the spotlight on sax in between the verses. “The Wheel” then gave way to Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately” sung by guitarist Scott Metzger. After some cacophonous freeform jamming which saw Bogie picking up his flute, the band then embarked on a “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” excursion which concluded with the Jerry Garcia solo favorite “Cats Under The Stars.” Metzger then helmed “Feel Like A Stranger” before the sextet closed out the first frame with “Not Fade Away.”
The second set kicked off with a dynamic jam that ramped up with Hamilton wailing on Wolf and Bogie back on flute leading into “Here Comes Sunshine,” all told clocking in at around 20 minutes. Stuart returned to sax by the time JRAD got to “Truckin,’” which flowed into another 20-minute-plus exploration. The three-song seamless set opening sequence closed with “Cassidy,” with Bogie back on flute. The band closed out the second set with another big segued section including “St. Stephen” encompassing “The Eleven,” followed by “Ruben and Cherise” and “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” to cap the frame. JRAD returned for a rollicking “Johnny B. Goode” encore with Stuart adding some classic rock ‘n’ roll sax.
The second show saw JRAD going it alone. Saturday night in Boston boasted a “Foolish Heart” opener sung by Hamilton ahead of “New Minglewood Blues” helmed by Metzger. Next, keyboardist Marco Benevento had a pretty piano intro in store for the beginning to “Bird Song,” which stretched out to nearly 15 minutes. Metzger then led the band through “Black-Throated Wind.” A traditional “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain” wrapped the first set on Saturday.
Another classic pairing, “Lost Sailor” and “Saint Of Circumstance” began the second frame. JRAD then embarked on the Pink Floyd epic “Echoes” for 28 minutes topped only by the massive, 32-minute “Terrapin Station” that would follow. “Throwing Stones” came next which gave way to The Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Jessica” ahead of a return to “Throwing Stones” with elements of Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2” followed by a wild jam and yet another return to “Throwing Stones.” JRAD came back out to encore with “Ramble On Rose” to seal the two-night run.
