Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Eggy teamed up for an intimate show at The Loft on Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday as part of this year’s Vineyard Campout. Pigeons played two headlining sets after Eggy opened the show, and the bands traded sit-ins, with PPPP guitarist Jeremy Schon joining Eggy and Eggy’s Jake Brownstein returning the favor.
After Pigeons kicked off the weekend with help from Maggie Rose on Friday, Eggy opened Saturday’s festivities with a seven-song set that featured Brownstein on pedal steel for several numbers including the band’s debut of Gerry Rafferty‘s “Right Down The Line”. Later in the set, Eggy offered another cover debut, Duran Duran‘s “Hungry Like The Wolf”, with Jeremy Schon sitting in on guitar.
Following Eggy’s set, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong opened their portion of the evening with a jam-laden “Yo Soy Fiesta”. After runs through “Hit the Ground Runnin’”, “Whirled”, “Henrietta”, “Let The Boogie Out”, the band welcomed Eggy guitarist Jake Brownstein back to the stage to sit in on “Lightning”. Pigeons then finished the set with a “Julia” > “Beanstalk” > “Julia” sandwich.
PPPP’s second set was packed with improvised jams and segues. “Overrun” opened the set ahead of a sequence of “Landing” > “Jam” > “The Town”. “Drunk People” then gave way to “Moonwalk”, which was left unfinished as the band segued into “All Along The Evil Woman”, a mashup of the Bob Dylan-penned “All Along The Watchtower” and ELO favorite “Evil Woman”. Pigeons returned to “Drunk People” to complete the sequence before closing the set with “Poseidon” > “Beneath The Surface” and “Doc”. They finally brought the two-day event to a climactic close with a “Day In Time” encore, bringing the two-day event to a climactic end.
