Gov’t Mule played two sets of classic songs on Saturday night at the Fox Theatre in celebration of the venue’s 30th anniversary. The setlist for the show in Boulder, Colorado consisted of songs debuted by the band prior to 2000.
Gov’t Mule first appeared at the Fox in 1994, which was just their seventh show. The band played the 625-person capacity venue several more times through 1999. Prior to Saturday, Mule’s most recent concert at the Fox took place in 2005.
Guitarist Warren Haynes, bassist Jorgen Carlsson, drummer Matt Abts and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis kicked off Gov’t Mule’s first performance at the Fox in 17 years with a cover of Son House’s “Grinnin’ in Your Face,” which was the opening track on their self-titled 1995 debut album. The first set continued to pull from Gov’t Mule as Haynes and his bandmates worked through “Temporary Saint,” the rarely played “Dolphineus,” “Painted Silver Light,” “Trane,” “Rocking Horse,” “Monkey Hill” and “Mother Earth.” A cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “Sins A Good Man’s Brother” filled the set closer role.
Set two saw Gov’t Mule sourcing from their second album, 1998’s Dose, as “Raven Black Night” was busted out after set break. “Larger Than Life” came next and incorporated “If 6 Was 9” by Jimi Hendrix, who passed away 52 years ago today. Continuing to pull from Dose, “Game Face” surrounded a rendering of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam,” followed by a break-out performance of “Towering Fool.” Next was one of two songs played on Saturday off Mule’s third studio LP, Temporary Insanity, “No Need To Suffer.”
The fitting Dose original “Birth Of The Mule” and the album’s opening track, “Blind Man In The Dark” were the final two songs of the second set. The encore consisted of the other Temporary Insanity song to make Saturday’s celebratory setlist as “Tastes Like Wine” brought an end to the rarities-infused concert.
