Widespread Panic Welcomes Bobby Rush At MEMPHO

Renowned blues musician Bobby Rush was Widespread Panic‘s special guest on Sunday at the MEMPHO Music Festival in Memphis. Rush led the sextet through two of his songs towards the middle of their lone set on the final day of the three-day event.

Widespread Panic returned to the Radians Amphitheater stage one day after a Saturday night set at MEMPHO that included a four-song appearance from Chuck Leavell. The band’s second set of MEMPHO 2022 began with a run of oldies that included “Make Sense To Me,” “Little Kin,” “Machine” and “Barstools And Dreamers.” Bobby Rush then emerged with Panic following a set of his own on the event’s Music Gives Stage.

The Grammy-winning Bobby Rush — a member of the Blues Hall Of Fame, Mississippi Musicians Hall Of Fame and Rhythm & Blues Hall Of Fame — first fronted Widespread Panic on “Gotta Have Money.” Last night marked the veteran jam act’s debut performance of the title track from Rush’s 1984 studio album. The 88-year-old musician both sang and played harmonica on “Gotta Have Money” last night.

Bobby Rush stuck around to helm “Bowlegged Woman.” Rush co-wrote the song Panic has been covering since 1987 with Calvin Nash. Once again, the legendary Rush provided vocals and took a number of harmonica solos throughout. Widespread Panic continued on after the guest appearance with “Dyin’ Man.” The six-piece then embarked on a seamless sequence that connected “Thought Sausage,” “Ride Me Fish,” “Fishwater,” “Red Hot Mama,” “Tie Your Shoes” and “Honky Red.”

Last night’s Widespread Panic set and the MEMPHO Music Festival came to a close with the Vic Chesnutt-penned pairing of “Protein Drink” and “Sewing Machine.” Watch fan-shot video featuring Widespread Panic performing with Bobby Rush at MEMPHO below:
