Watch Eddie Vedder Cover The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’ In Las Vegas

Eddie Vedder debuted a cover of “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure on Friday night at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas. The Pearl Jam frontman and his solo band the Earthlings premiered the cover at the beginning of the evening’s encore.

Vedder’s bandmates include Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, multi-instrumentalist Josh Klinghoffer, bassist Chris Chaney and guitarist Andrew Watt. The main set consisted of nine of the 13 songs that make up Vedder’s 2022 solo album, Earthling. Those were played alongside covers of songs by Tom Petty, The Beatles and The Who, as well as few selections from Pearl Jam’s catalog.

After coming back out for the encore, Vedder talked about the inspiration to cover “Just Like Heaven,” telling the Vegas audience:

You know some good things came out of COVID. One thing in our house, is my wife and I, you know because we were isolated, we couldn’t go out, we were in lockdown … We started having these – it was just my wife and I – just these kind of wild dance parties in our garage. And I will always have great memories of those incredible dance parties. The kids would come in, check on us and then kind of get embarrassed and have to leave. But we had a fucking blast. It started just with her car door open and then cranking great music. But then we ended up getting disco lights and smoke machines. This song – this is one of the ones that we would play. We’ve [the band] never played it before. We only played it about an hour ago, right before we came on.

The rest of the encore was filled in with Pearl Jam’s “Dirty Frank,” George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity,” Temple Of A Dog’s “Hunger Strike,” Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.” Watch the “Just Like Heaven” debut via the audience-captured video below:
