Get a cup of piping hot black coffee and a slice of cherry pie ready for footage of LCD Soundsystem covering the theme from Twink Peaks, “Falling”. The cover came days after the death of Angelo Badalamenti, who composed the score and was a longtime collaborator of Twin Peaks director David Lynch.
The tribute arrived in the encore of LCD Soundsystem’s 17th of 20 shows at Brooklyn Steel. In the middle of “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down”, the music slowed to a crawl as the iconic Twin Peaks Red Room chevron pattern appeared on an LED screen. The equally iconic Rhodes intro to the groundbreaking ABC mystery soon followed as Badalamenti’s chord ascension filled the room just before the band dropped back into “New York, I Love You”.
Badalamenti passed away on Tuesday at the age of 85 from an unspecified cause. He first encountered David Lynch on the set of the Eraserhead director’s 1986 film Blue Velvet, working as a voice coach with actress Isabella Rossellini. Lynch found a simpatico artistic partner in Badalamenti, and the two would go on to work together on many of Lynch’s films including Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, and Mullholland Drive. Badalamenti’s work carried through all of the Twin Peaks iterations including the 1992 film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and the lauded 18-episode sequel series in 2017.
“I sit next to him and I talk to him, and he plays what I say,” Lynch said of their work during an interview with the American Film Institute.
