Phish returns to Mexico this weekend for the sixth iteration of their Riviera Maya destination event (Phish: Riviera Maya did not take place in 2018 and 2021.) The ocean has always been a big inspiration for Phish’s music — guitarist Trey Anastasio and lyricist Tom Marshall often hold seaside writing sessions. Trey, Page McConnell, Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman have presided over some memorable versions of more than a few of those marine-themed tunes in their Mexico setlists over the years.

Sand, Ghost, 2001 | January 15, 2016

Phish’s inaugural trip to Mexico took place at Barceló Maya Beach (its current home is the Moon Palace in Cancun) in January 2016. After opening the second set on January 15 with The Who’s “Drowned” into “What’s The Use,” Phish captained a top shelf “Sand” that boasted climactic moments as well as some crunchy funk that floated into “Ghost” and on into “Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001).” The band also played “Sand” in 2017, 2019 and 2020 making 2022 the only year the song was absent from Riviera Maya so far.

Free | February 20, 2020

“Free” is a safe bet at just about any Phish show these days but it’s almost a certainty in Mexico. The quartet has played the song at every Phish: Riviera Maya destination event. The song carries the line “we’ll be splashing in the sea,” which one can literally do at Rivera Maya. Check out the +14-minute February 20, 2020 rendition.

Waves | February 22, 2020

One might think the ocean apropos “Waves” would be heavily played in Mexico. But the song made its Riviera Maya debut on February 22, 2020, which is the only performance in Mexico to date. The monster “Waves” had varied jams, a big peak, “Soul Planet” quotes and stretched to nearly 20 minutes.

A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing | February 25, 2022

While Phish played “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” in Mexico in 2016 and 2017, the band shelved the marine-themed number until Riviera Maya 2022. But it was a doozy. The February 25th performance marked the first time the song closed a second set. The spot usually features not necessarily long but strong jamming, and the 2022 “ASIHTOS” followed that trend.

Wolfman’s Brother | February 26, 2022

The next night after the 2022 “ASIHTOS” (February 26, 2022) saw Phish fill the penultimate first set slot with a massive “Wolfman’s Brother.” The song carries the line “like a cross between a hurricane and a ship that’s run aground.” Here’s what the phish.net jam chart notes about the nearly 23-minute, monster “Wolfman’s”:

“Like a cross between a breeze and the space between stars, the jam, a smooth and total sound, breaks free all but immediately and becomes a true show-stopper. Trey, atop Fish’s scattershot (off)beat, both creates and occupies space – it feels like it, but he never stops playing – the resulting improv remarkable in its restraint, notable for its ingenuity, and startlingly refreshing. Terrific play from all four creates a sound (driven space, as opposed to ambience; give “ER” a spin, for instance) that will likely stand out from this excellent run.”

Livestreams for Riviera Maya 2023 are available to purchase via LivePhish.com. Webcasts can be ordered individually or as a discounted four-show bundle.
