Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Share Previously Unreleased ‘Reunions’ Era Song ‘They Wait’

Tonight (Friday, April 7), the new Jason Isbell documentary Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed premieres on HBO. The film captures the process that yielded Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit‘s 2020 album, Reunions. “They Wait,” a previously unreleased song from the Reunions sessions, dropped today.

“They Wait” is featured in Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed according to multiple fans who have watched the documentary. The song contains lead vocals from Isbell and harmonies by his wife, Amanda Shires. Both acoustic and electric guitars are included within the rocking “They Wait,” which closes with a rousing electric guitar solo.

Reunions was recorded by Isbell and 400 Unit bandmates Chad Gamble, Sadler Vaden, Jimbo Hart and Derry DeBorja with frequent collaborator producer Dave Cobb at Nashville’s RCA Studio A. The Isbell-produced follow-up, Weathervanes, is due out via Southeastern Records/Thirty Tigers on June 9.

Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed can be viewed on HBO Max after tonight’s premiere. Isbell and The 400 Unit kick off an extensive spring tour in support of Weathervanes later this month.
