Kung Fu honored The Who by performing a set entirely made up of covers of songs by the legendary classic rock band. The special show took place Saturday at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City and featured sit-ins by guitarist Pete Francis of Dispatch and keyboardist Richard James of Pink Talking Fish.
Kung Fu’s first set at Brooklyn Bowl was comprised of the funk outfit’s original material led by “Daddy D.” Francis emerged near the end of the opening set to assist on “Two Coins” by Dispatch. The guest guitarist stuck around for a subsequent rendition of “Rubbermoon.” After Francis’ exit, Kung Fu selected “Samurai” for the final song before setbreak.
The pre-billed The Who set kicked off with “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” The tribute continued with “I Can’t Explain” and a sequence of “Overture” > “It’s A Boy” > “Bargain.” James then came onstage to augment “Drowned.” The rest of the set included The Who favorites “Eminence Front,” “Baba O’Riley,” “The Real Me,” “Pinball Wizard” and “We’re Not Gonna Take it.” The encore was “Who Are You” followed by “My Generation” punctuated by the smashing of guitars and drums.
