Pixie & The Partygrass Boys released a cover of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse.” The track will appear on the Salt Lake City string band’s upcoming covers album, The Chicken Coop Vol. 1, arriving on May 19 via Americana Vibes.

Pixie & The Party Grass Boys — Katia “Pixie” Racine, Amanda Grapes, Andrew Nelson, Ben Weiss and Zach Downes — announced The Chicken Coop Vol. 1 in late March and shared a cover of the Thelma Houston-popularized “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” The SLC group followed with “The Devil Went Down To Utah,” a take on Charlie Daniels’ classic featuring The Infamous Stringdusters Jeremy Garrett on fiddle. The covers LP also sees guest spots from Jeremy’s Dusters bandmate dobroist Andy Hall as well as Canadian flutist Anh Phung and Colorado banjoist Sam Armstrong-Zickefoose.

The latest from The Chicken Coop is a cover of Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” originally appearing on the pop star’s 2013 album Prism. Members of Pixie & The Partygrass Boys selected the song after they found they all had it in their individual repertoires.

“We tried to tweak the groove on this song only a little bit, recreating the dark and spacious electronic beat as best we could with our string band,” the group noted of their “Dark Horse” cover. “If you were hoping someone would do Juicy J’s rap, you’ll unfortunately have to settle for a guitar solo and a mandolin solo.”
