See Warren Haynes Join The Avett Brothers For Poignant ‘I Shall Be Released’ In Peoria

The Avett Brothers and Gov’t Mule teamed up for their third of four June concerts together on Tuesday in Peoria, Illinois. Mule frontman Warren Haynes came out during The Avetts’ headlining set for covers of Merle Haggard’s “Rainbow Stew” and Bob Dylan/The Band’s “I Shall Be Released” last night at the Peoria Civic Center.

Haynes emerged towards the end of The Avett Brothers’ 21-song main set in Peoria. Scott Avett told the crowd he spends a lot of time on the tour bus watching Warren play guitar. “Don’t worry about what YouTube is Warren,” Avett quipped. “It’s like VHS.” Scott then helmed the collaborative “Rainbow Stew.”

Merle Haggard wrote and recorded “Rainbow Stew” for inclusion on his 1981 live album Rainbow Stew Live at Anaheim Stadium. The live version peaked at the four-slot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. After debuting their cover of “Rainbow Stew” on December 29, 2010, The Avetts shelved the song until the first night of the run with Gov’t Mule outside a lone 2016 performance. “Rainbow Stew” was played at each of the band’s last four shows.

Warren Haynes stuck around for “I Shall Be Released” last night in Peoria. The Avett Brothers’ Tania Elizabeth put down her fiddle to sing the beginning of the song penned by Bob Dylan and initially recorded with The Band during the Basement Tapes sessions in 1967. Haynes went on to handle lead vocals on the middle of “I Shall Be Released” on Tuesday in Peoria before passing back off to Elizabeth.

The Gov’t Mule guitarist also worked in powerful slide riffs within “I Shall Be Released” and took a memorable solo. The collaborations in Peoria were a repeat of what went down at The Avett Brothers/Gov’t Mule co-bill in Rogers, Arkansas last Saturday, June 17.

Mule kicked off last night’s show with an hour-long set. Haynes and bandmates drummer Matt Abts, bassist Kevin Scott and multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis mixed old favorites “Railroad Boy,” “Banks Of The Deep End,” “Mule” and “Soulshine” with covers of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” and Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.” Additionally, the quartet treated fans to “Dreaming Out Loud” and “Same As It Ever Was” from their just released album Peace…Like A River.

The Avett Brothers delivered a career-spanning main frame in Peoria. Scott Avett, Seth Avett and the rest of the ensemble returned to wrap the night with a “Talk On Indolence”/”No Hard Feelings” encore.

Gov’t Mule and The Avett Brothers share the bill one last time tomorrow (Thursday, June 22) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Find both acts’ tour dates below.
