Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942 and died on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53. Each year, the “Days Between” Garcia’s birthday and the anniversary of his death mark a period of time to reflect on and celebrate the beloved musician’s life and career.
On July 16, 1995, Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia participated in a recording session at mandolinist David Grisman’s home studio in Mill Valley, California. The session was Garcia’s final known recording session prior to his untimely death on this date in 1995.
The purpose of the recording session at Dawg Studios was to record a song for a Jimmie Rodgers tribute album. Garcia had been asked to contribute to the compilation album by Bob Dylan, whose record label curated and released The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers – A Tribute. Dylan went so far as to handwrite a letter to Garcia seeking his participation in the tribute to Rogers.
In his letter to Garcia, Dylan wrote:
My record company (a very limited one) is doing a Jimmie Rodgers tribute record – you don’t have to yodel – there’s plenty of songs where he doesn’t yodel but if you want to yodel, that’s ok too –
Anyway one of the performers on this record will be me and of course the perfect song for me is Blue Eyed Jane. And it’s included with this letter – Did ya hear my version of “Two Soldiers”? Anyway if it’s not too much to ask, think about a Jimmie song – let me know something in some kind of incalculated amount of time – whatever you decide is ok with me –

Dylan did record “My Blue Eyed Jane” for The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers – A Tribute, which eventually came out in 1997. The track appeared alongside tracks recorded by Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bono, Dickie Betts, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, Mary Chapin Carpenter, John Mellencamp, Aaron Neville, David Ball and Iris DeMent.
Garcia recorded at least two versions of Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel No. 9 (Standing On The Corner)” – a song he played with the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band in 1987 and 1988 – with Grisman on July 16, 1995. Joining Garcia and Grisman on the track were bassist John Kahn, dobro player Sally Van Meter and percussionist George Marsh. Overdubbed parts were later recorded by saxophonist Martin Fierro, clarinet player Jim Rothermel, trumpeter Peter Welker and trombonist Kevin Porter.
A different version of “Blue Yodel No. 9” from the July 16 recording session later appeared on the Garcia/Grisman compilation. The overdubbed horn parts are absent from that track, which can be streamed below:
