Acclaimed English guitarist Bernie Marsden, who was a member of Whitesnake, has died at age 72. His death was confirmed by a message posted by his family.

The statement reads:

On behalf of his family, it is with deep sadness we announce the death of Bernie Marsden. Bernie died peacefully on Thursday evening with his wife, Fran, and daughters, Charlotte and Olivia, by his side.

Bernie never lost his passion for music, writing and recording new songs until the end.

Marsden was born in Buckingham, England on May 7, 1951. At the age of 17, Marsden formed a band called Skinny Cat. His first professional gig playing guitar came in 1972 when he joined UFO. His tenure in UFO was short-lived and the following year he was playing with Glenn Cornick’s Wild Turkey.

Marsden was then recruited by drummer Cozy Powell to join another short-lived band called Hammer. Powell connected Marsden with former Deep Purple members Ian Paice and Jon Lord and in 1977 they formed the Paice Ashton Lord group (with vocalist Tony Ashton), finding some success with the track “Malice in Wonderland.”

Other former Deep Purple members, vocalist David Coverdale and guitarist Micky Moody, sought out Marsden in 1978. First calling themselves David Coverdale’s Whitesnake, the band eventually became known as Whitesnake. Marsden wrote or co-wrote many of Whitesnake’s hit songs, including chart-topping hair metal anthem “Here I Go Again.”

Marsden’s stint with Whitesnake saw him contribute to the group’s debut EP. He also appeared on their 1978 albums, Snakebite and Trouble, 1979’s Love Hunter, 1980’s Ready & Willing, 1981’s Come An’ Get It and 1982’s Saints & Sinners along with the 1980 live album, Live In The Heart Of The City. He logged songwriting credits on additional favorites such as “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues,” “Fool for Your Loving” and “Child of Babylon,” among others.

While a member of Whitesnake, Marsden released the solo albums, And About Time Too and Look at Me Now. Marsden left Whitesnake in 1981 and soon formed the group Alaska, issuing two albums with the band in the 1980s.

Subsequent decades saw Marsden continuing to record and perform in a variety of settings. Conquest Music released Marsden’s solo albums Kings and Chess in 2021 and Trios in 2022.

According to Marsden’s website his collaborators include, “Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Jon Lord, Gary Moore … the Ringo Starr Band, Cozy Powell, Rory Gallagher, Jack Bruce, Warren Haynes, Joe Bonamassa [and] Ginger Baker.”
