Brittany Howard had a big Tuesday as the singer-songwriter signed to Island Records, confirmed the completion of a new album, and announced tour dates. The multi-hyphenate musician who rose to prominence with Alabama Shakes will head out on the road this fall for a run of eight tour dates on the What Now Tour 2023.
“Surprise!!!! I just finished my new album and felt the itch to play some shows!!!!” Howard wrote on social media.
The tour dates focus on the southern U.S. starting in Howard’s native Alabama with a show in Birmingham (11/6). She will also visit the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville (11/7) along with stops in Knoxville (11/9), Memphis (11/10), Atlanta (11/11), Houston (11/14), and Dallas (11/15) before wrapping with an appearance in Mexico City (11/17). Multi-instrumentalist L’rain will join the tour as support.
A pre-sale for tickets to the Brittany Howard What Now Tour 2023 begins Wednesday, September 13th at 11 a.m. ET, accessible with the password “WHATNOW”. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, September 15th at 10 a.m. local time via Howard’s website. Stay tuned for more information on new music.
Howard did not provide any additional details on the album, other than that it is completed. After making a name for herself as the singer-songwriter/guitarist of Alabama Shakes with a pair of instant-classic, critically and commercially acclaimed albums in the mid-2010s, Howard stepped out on her own with her debut solo album, Jamie, in 2019. The album, still her only full-length solo release of new music, picked up five Grammy nominations including a win for Best Rock Song for “Stay High”. In 2021, she took a fresh look at the album with Jaime (Reimagined) featuring renewed takes on the tracks with collaborations by Childish Gambino, Bon Iver, BADBADNOTGOOD, EARTHGANG, and more.
Alabama Shakes went on hiatus in 2018 as Howard devoted herself to Jaime, named after her sister who died of retinoblastoma as a teen. In 2020, Alabama Shakes guitarist Heath Frogg released his solo debut under the name Sun on Shade.
