Watch Talking Heads’ 1st Television Interview In Decades To Discuss ‘Stop Making Sense’ & More

Talking Heads members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison recently appeared on CBS Sunday Morning, marking their first television interview together in decades. The former bandmates discussed their groundbreaking, Jonathan Demme-directed 1984 concert film, Stop Making Sense — recently restored and re-released for its 40th anniversary — and more.

The revamped Stop Making Sense premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival where the band appeared together in public for the first time since their 2002 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, which was also their last performance. The interview began with CBS’s Tony Dokoupil reading a quote from a New York Times critic who called Stop Making Sense “nutty jubilation.”

Very on brand, David Byrne asked, “What was that phrase, nutty delicious?” Byrne went on to say. “When I first saw the screening recently, which had been probably a couple decades, and I saw myself and I thought, ‘Who is that guy?’”

When asked “what is the story being told in Stop Making Sense?” Tina Weymouth replied, “It’s the story of love.” And while it appeared that the band’s love for one another had cooled not long after Stop Making Sense — which was filmed on their final tour — was released and certainly in the aftermath of their breakup in 1991, Weymouth had some sage words about “family.”

“Families…don’t bite each other, they take chunks out,” she said. “But the beauty of it is, well, maybe you don’t forget — but you forgive.”
