Guitarist John Mayer took the stage last night at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida for the second of two performances at the venue to start the Fall 2023 leg of his solo acoustic tour. Mayer debuted his one-man unplugged take on the “Lady With A Fan” section of the Grateful Dead‘s “Terrapin Station” towards the middle of the concert.

The latest solo arena tour from Mayer comes two months after Dead & Company ended their final tour in San Francisco. John Mayer played “Terrapin Station” often as a member of the Grateful Dead offshoot. He also performed an acoustic version of the song with Bob Weir at a benefit concert in Montana on August 8, 2022.

“Terrapin Station” is presented on the Grateful Dead’s 1977 studio album of the same name as a seven-part suite entitled “Terrapin Part 1.” Credited to Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, “Lady With A Fan” is the first section of the suite. John Mayer used “Lady With A Fan” to introduce “The Age Of Worry” from his 2012 LP, Born & Raised, on Thursday.

Over the first two nights of tour John Mayer stuck to a similar format as his other solo acoustic shows. Mayer started by delivering a career-spanning collection of songs on acoustic guitar and then moved to piano for “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me” and “Changing” at each show. The latter saw Mayer loop piano and electric guitar at the end.

John Mayer was back on acoustic guitar after the piano interlude. Mayer began the second acoustic guitar portion of the evening on Thursday by pairing “Stop This Train” with a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.” He then looked back to his early days for “Your Body Is A Wonderland, “In Your Atmosphere” and “Comfortable.” Mayer played “Comfortable” by request. The guitarist went on to utilize his double-neck acoustic for “If I Ever Get Around To Living” and “Edge Of Desire” berfore saying farewell with a “Born And Raised” encore.

Next up for Mayer are appearances at the Oceans Calling and Sound On Sound festivals this weekend. A full list of dates can be found below.
