As part of their 50th anniversary celebration, Shakti, led by guitarist John McLaughlin and tabla master Zakir Hussain, recently stopped by NPR Studios for a Tiny Desk Concert. The Indian jazz fusion ensemble performed songs from their first album in 46 years, 2023’s This Moment, plus a tune from McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Shakti — McLaughlin, Hussain, vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakaram (kanjira, ghatam) and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan — launched their 20-minute set with This Moment opening track “Shrini’s Dream.” The performance boasted the characteristically virtuosic play fans of McLaughlin and Hussain are familiar with along with impressive chops from Mahadevan, Vinayakaram and Rajagopalan.
The quintet continued with “Lotus Feet.” The song originally appears on Mahavishnu Orchestra’s 1976 album Inner Worlds. The fusion group wrapped the session with This Moment’s “Bending the Rules.”
