Tedeschi Trucks Band co-leader Susan Tedeschi laid out the “soundtrack of her life” for a new feature published on LouderSound.com’s Classic Rock site. The vocalist/guitarist reminisced about such topics as the first song she played live, the best live band she’s ever seen, the greatest album of all time, the guitar hero and more.

Susan Tedeschi kept it all in the family with her selection of guitar hero. “It seems kinda silly to choose my husband, Derek, but he really is up there as one of the greatest guitar players I’ve ever heard or played with,” Tedeschi explained of her TTB and romantic partner Derek Trucks.

Tedeschi’s response for best live band also involved Derek. “I was lucky enough to tour with the Allman Brothers, and they were dynamite,” Susan noted of a group that featured Derek Trucks from 1999 through their final shows in 2014. “I got to see them fullforce – other than with Duane. They were on fire. I was blown away by the chemistry between Butch [Trucks] and Jaimoe [Johnson] on drums, and then, the intricate guitar playing and the soulfulness of Gregory’s singing and organ playing.”

The 52-year-old musician picked a record released on the day she was born — November 9, 1970 — as the greatest album of all time. “Let’s go with Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs from Derek And The Dominos,” Tedeschi wrote. “We recorded that entire album live with Trey Anastasio from Phish, and then it became a record [2021’s Layla Revisited]. I just love Eric Clapton so much.”

As for the first song Susan Tedeschi played live, the choice is a little surprising since it’s not among the hundreds of covers the TTB have played over the past 14 years. “I was in rock bands from the age of thirteen,” Susan recalled. “We had a gig at the local yacht club dance, and I think the first song we played was ‘Magic Man’ by Heart.” Here’s hoping the Tedeschi Trucks Band adds the Heart classic to their live repertoire one day.

Other questions responded to by Susan Tedeschi include “The first song I learnt on guitar,” “The song that reminds me of adolescence,” “The first music I remember hearing,” “The songwriter” and “The best song from my breakthrough album.” Visit LouderSound.com to read the rest of Tedeschi’s selections.

Tedeschi Trucks Band opens for the Eagles tonight and Saturday at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Susan and Derek then head off on The Big Easy Cruise.
