Sudden Little Thrills, the new music festival scheduled to bring big names like SZA, The Killers, Wiz Khalifa, and more to Pittsburgh, PA later this year, has been canceled just a month after its inaugural lineup was revealed.
The cancellation was announced in a post on the festival’s website on Tuesday in which organizers explained, “We were excited to bring a new world-class music festival to Pittsburgh. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, the Sudden Little Thrills festival will not take place in 2024. Tickets purchased directly through Front Gate Tickets will be automatically refunded in as little as 30 days to the original method of payment.” The note did not indicate whether or not the festival would attempt to launch again in the future.
The inaugural edition of the two-day festival, produced by the Live Nation Entertainment-owned C3 Presents (Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, etc.) in collaboration with the Pittsburgh city leaders and officials, was due to take place at Hazelwood Green on September 7th and 8th. In addition to The Killers, SZA, and Wiz Khalifa, the event was scheduled to feature performances by St. Vincent, Fletcher, Girl Talk, Crowded House, Ethel Cain, Del Water Gap, Omar Apollo, Yung Gravy, Hippo Campus, Juvenile, Lupe Fiasco, and more.

Although Sudden Little Thrills organizers did not specify why they scrapped their inaugural event, festival cancellations, postponements, and restructurings have become increasingly common in 2024 in the face of rising tour and production costs and a widely reported decline in advance ticket sales. Much like Sudden Little Thrills, events like Ventura, CA’s Skull & Roses, Mammoth, CA’s Horseshoe Music Festival, and Ozark, AR’s Backwoods at Mulberry Mountain attempted to mount 2024 events but eventually pulled the plug. The list of established festivals taking planned years off in 2024 off has also grown in recent months to include Indianapolis, IN’s All IN Music Festival, Atlanta, GA’s Music Midtown, Dover, DE’s Firefly Music Festival, Rye, CO’s Sonic Bloom, Chattanooga, TN’s Riverbend Festival, Okeechobee, FL’s Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, Philadelphia, PA’s Made In America Festival, and more. SweetWater 420 Fest also downsized its planned 2024 event at the last minute, shifting to a free ticket model and cutting roughly half of its artists, while Summer Camp rebranded the 2024 edition of its annual Memorial Day Weekend festival as Solshine Reverie.
