Tedeschi Trucks Band kicked off a new leg of its Deuces Wild tour in Portland, OR with two nights at the upscale Keller Auditorium.

The band recently proved its mettle with a jump up to arenas for The Garden Parties and likely could have filled one of Portland’s indoor sheds, like Billy Strings, who made the leap to the Moda Center last fall. Instead, however, TTB set the tone for their extensive Deuces Wild tour, which is set to stretch into October, at a far classier venue—one that hosts more Broadway productions, ballets, operas than rock and roll bands. The elegant room and its tiered balcony sections, along with the minimalistic lighting rig, which was based around moving, color-changing chandeliers and strips of long, flowing curtain fabric, perfectly complimented the regal spirit of the band.

The audience was mostly older, and generally more eager to listen than to dance, but there was plenty of time for both as TTB returned to the stage for the first time since Sun, Sand and Soul earlier this month. The 12-piece ensemble was ever changing through the dynamic performance. Sometimes the horns would leave for a song before announcing their return with a solo interlude, and sometimes Derek Trucks would walk over to them to feel their full power or engage in a slide guitar vs slide trombone duel. Each member of the band had their time in the spotlight, with Susan Tedeschi, Gabe Dixon, and Mike Mattison sharing lead vocal duties.

Tedeschi Trucks Band opened with fan favorite “Playing With My Emotion” and “Ain’t That Something”, from the band’s 2022 four-part audio-visual epic I Am The Moon. Another crowd pleaser, “Made Up Mind”, wound down the first set ahead of “Idle Wind” > “Drums” > “Idle Wind (Reprise)”. The second set opened with Van Morrison‘s “Caravan”, “Anyhow”, and “Fall In” before TTB broke out the title track from I Am The Moon. The band then welcomed Tony Coleman, who played drums with B.B. King for 25 years, to sit in on King’s “You Don’t Know”. “Beck’s Bolero” closed the set before a “Show Me” (Joe Tex) encore.

Night two opened with another fan favorite, “Hear My Dear”, followed by “Bound for Glory”, which was usually appears later in the set. The first set also included powerful versions of “Until You Remember”, “Soul Sweet Song”, and “Midnight in Harlem”. Set two began with “Come See About Me” and Wet Willie‘s “Keep on Smilin’”. Later in the set, after covering Van Morrison and Taj Mahal, TTB dove deep with “Circles ‘Round the Sun” > “Pasaquan” and ended the set with a Susan Tedeschi song, “Just Won’t Burn”, which featured a standout guitar solo and vocals from Tedeschi, and a gospel-infused cover of Billy Taylor‘s “I Wish I Knew”. The band returned to the stage joined by percussionist Bobby Torres, who played in Joe Cocker‘s band, for the group’s debut of Cocker’s “High Time We Went” and Matthew Moore‘s “Space Captain”.

Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Deuces Wild tour continues through the summer and into fall with dates around the U.S. and Canada featuring special guests Little Feat, Margo Price, Joe Purdy, and Greensky Bluegrass on select dates before concluding with two shows at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on October 8th and 9th. TTB also just announced it will begin streaming shows live via nugs starting with the band’s upcoming two-night run at Berkeley, CA’s Greek Theatre on May 31st and June 1st and posted live audio from 19 shows dating back to 2016.
