Perth’s duo SCRATCHING is in an exciting new chapter of its debut under AWAL. The duo comprises singer-songwriter Grace Sanders and co-writer/producer Ezekiel Padmanabham from Methyl Ethel. Off to a brisk start in announcing the duo to the world with their debut single, ‘Closer’ along with a music video.
The single ‘Closer’ reflects the musical taste that SCRATCHING draws from, ranging from Jockstrap to Aldous Harding and Frank Ocean. The track hosts a form of idealized love, in which desire drips through and onset possession speaks for itself.
The duo has explained the song articulates confusion of feeling close and far away from someone at the same time; it captures intimate closeness and choked-by-proximity feelings.
SCRATCHING – ‘Closer’
SCRATCHING Formed by Grace Sanders, the pair carved a reputation from their 2021 EP GUMS and 2022’s nothing is personal, picking up plaudits from Triple J and NME in the process. SCRATCHING is now hard at work on an upcoming self titled project with a completely DIY ethos, blending dance music with alternative influences to create the most vivid and eccentric material yet.
SCRATCHING shared the meaning behind the single saying. “[The track is about] a dream or vision of someone that is within reaching distance yet continues to evade you. The song explores desire and possession and how those emotions can interplay with each other to become one and the same”.
They added. “Love and feeling that you’re almost JUST close enough to be ‘with’ someone, to possess them, to call them yours is innocent in theory, yet we found ourselves interested in interpreting some of the more intense and dark elements of what these kinds of sentiments can mean. Proximity can be both intimate and suffocating at the same time”
