Phish has released “Live Saving Gun”, the latest single from the jam quartet’s 16th studio album, Evolve, due out this Friday via the band’s JEMP Records. The track marks the fourth to arrive from the new LP following its title track, “Oblivion“, and “Hey Stranger“.

The latest Phish Evolve single, which first appeared on 2023’s Trey Anastasio/Page McConnell duo album, January, has made a number of notable live appearances since its live Phish debut last summer. In addition to becoming a staple of Anastasio’s Classic TAB setlists, “Life Saving Gun” has already been performed by Phish at Nashville’s Bridgstone Arena (10/7/23), Mexico’s Moon Palace (2/21/24), Las Vegas’ Sphere (4/18/24), and twice at New York’s Madison Square Garden (7/30/23, 12/30/23).

The studio version of the track leans into its surreal lyrics with a toothy backbeat from Jon Fishman and ethereal synth swirls from Page McConnell that accent and elevate a grinding rock melody from Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon. Rather than building toward a unified, climactic peak—a strategy well-honed by Phish over the course of four decades—the build-up to the song’s final chorus sounds more like entropy as synth delay and a “percussion rinse” from Fish drift further into sonic chaos.

Phish – “Life Saving Gun”

Many of the Evolve tracks (“Hey Stranger”, “Oblivion”, “Evolve”, “A Wave of Hope”, “Pillow Jets”, “Lonely Trip”, “Life Saving Gun”, “Ether Edge”, “Mercy”) have already made notable showings during live Phish shows. A number of the songs—including “Oblivion”, “Pillow Jets”, “Monsters”, “Ether Edge”, and “Valdese” (previously listed as “Valdise”)—were initially debuted by Trey Anastasio Trio during a summer 2023 weekend run in Denver. Several first appeared on non-Phish releases like mercy (“Hey Stranger”, “Mercy”), January (“Life Saving Gun”), and Lonely Trip (“Lonely Trip”, “A Wave of Hope”, “Evolve”), while “Human Nature” just saw its live debut last month on Mike Gordon’s solo run of West Coast shows. “The Well”, yet another song first revealed by Trey Anastasio Trio in Denver and later incorporated into late-2023 Phish performances, will also be included as a bonus track on vinyl copies of the album.
