Electric Forest returned to Rothbury, MI last month (Thursday, June 20th–Sunday, June 23rd) for its twelfth edition dating back to 2011. The 2024 edition of the electronic-leaning, multi-genre festival, which once again sold out well in advance, continued to prove its mettle as one of the most uniquely immersive events in the festival space despite a pair of weather-related closures.
An estimated audience of 50,000 in attendance (per MLive) came out to enjoy the festival’s elaborate production, surreal experiential activations, and heavy-hitting artist lineup. On the electronic side of the spectrum, headliners included Forest favorite Pretty Lights, Cyclops Recordings founder Subtronics, and a number of rare collaborative sets like EVERYTHING ALWAYS (Dom Dolla + John Summit), PSYREN (CloZee + LSDREAM), and Gigantic NGHTMRE (Big Gigantic and NGHTMRE), while stylistically contrasting artists like iconic Atlanta rapper Ludacris, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, rising dance-pop star Slayyyter, and others provided balance to Sherwood Forest’s sonic ecosystem. Other top-billed acts included Black Tiger Sex Machine, Ben Böhmer, and Knock2.
Additional house and techno favorites on the lineup included Mau P, LP Giobbi, DJ Tennis, Sultan + Shepard, TSHA, and Coco & Breezy, while heavier EDM acts Chase & Status, Barclay Crenshaw, ATLiens, Wooli, and Alison Wonderland alter ego Whyte Fang satisfyingly rattled the Double JJ Ranch and live-electronic groups like Cannons, NEIL FRANCES, and DRAMA helped bridge the gap between the DJs and live instrumentalists on the roster. A smattering of jam band scene staples including Forest mainstay The String Cheese Incident, prog-jam staple Umphrey’s McGee, trancefusion favorites The Disco Biscuits, funk powerhouses Lettuce and Dumpstaphunk, and rising jam quartet Eggy also performed throughout the weekend.
Thunderstorms on Saturday forced the festival organizers to clear the grounds for several hours, prompting the cancellation of The String Cheese Incident’s customary Saturday “Shebang.” A portion of the grounds reopened at midnight for sets by Subtronics at the Ranch, John Summit at Tripolee and PSYREN (CloZee + LSDREAM) at Sherwood Court, per MLive. When thunderstorms once again blew in on Sunday, organizers were forced to clear the venue once again and pull the plug on the remainder of its final day programming including scheduled sets by heavy bass producer Excision, Belgian techno queen Charlotte de Witte, and more.
