Pigeons Playing Ping Pong bassist Ben Carrey will take some time off from touring this summer, during which period Twiddle‘s Zdenek Gubb will substitute. The high-flying funky Baltimore foursome announced the lineup change on Thursday, one day ahead of their set at Jeezum Crow Festival in Vermont and on the precipice of a run of summer festivals and headlining shows.
“With the band’s full support, Ben will be taking some time off the road for personal reasons,” Pigeons wrote on social media. Though he will be greatly missed, we all agreed that the shows must go on! That said, we’re excited to jam with our longtime frend Zdenek Gubb for the next batch of shows, starting tomorrow in his home state of Vermont at Jeezum Crow Festival. Please join us in sending love to Ben, and get ready for some extra funky lemonade with Gubb!”
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong did not reveal how long Ben will be out and Gubb will be in, but the band has a pretty full schedule through the end of September. In addition to festival plays at Gambler’s Run Music Festival in Crystal Bay, NV (7/26–7/28) and free shows in Virginia Beach (7/24) and their native Baltimore (8/1), PPPP will link back up with Andy Frasco & The U.N. and Dogs In A Pile for more tripleheaders on the Pigeons Frasco Dogs Tour. The threesome will take over The Caverns in Pelham, TN for two nights (8/23–8/24) ahead of shows in Birmingham, AL (8/25), Worcester, MA (8/30), The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City (8/31), Portland, ME (9/1), Roseland, VA (9/6), and finally Charlotte, NC (9/7). Pigeons will round out September with more festival appearances at Bender Jamboree in Las Vegas (9/12–9/15) and Oceans Calling in Ocean City, MD (9/27–9/29). Gubb has had a pretty clear schedule lately since Twiddle went on indefinite hiatus at the end of 2023. Since then, he has toured with Twiddle frontman Mihali Savoulidis in the guitarist’s solo band (which also features Twiddle drummer Adrian Tramontano). He also contributed to the debut solo single from Aqueous’ Mike Gantzer—whose band is also on indefinite hiatus—”The Comeback Kids“, which features drums from Gubb’s now-bandmate Alex “Gator” Petropulos of Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Meanwhile, Gantzer is subbing for Spafford singer/guitarist Brian Moss as he recovers from injuries sustained in a car crash in the tour van.
