Olivia Rodrigo made her Kentucky stage debut on Wednesday with an endorsement from Bluegrass State dignitary Tyler Childers. The two seemingly opposing musical forces joined together for a duet on Childers’ 2019 Grammy-nominated single “All Your’n” for the latest stop on Rodrigo’s Guts World Tour.
“I’ve got a surprise for you,” the 21-year-old pop singer-songwriter coyly told the packed crowd at Lexington’s Rupp Arena. “I’m just such a huge fan of his, and this song we’re about to sing I think is one of my favorite love songs of all time.”
With that, Childers emerged from the wings to thunderous applause that proved merely a whimper compared to the deafening roar that greeted the bass roll and opening chords of “All Your’n”. Childers and Rodrigo switched off lines on the verses, Tyler’s holler drawl contrasting Rodrigo’s nubile but heartbroken innocence. The entire arena ably handled the chorus, though the two singers onstage still helped the cause.
Rodrigo’s worldwide tour behind her sophomore album Guts has already seen a few surprise guests. Back in March, Rodrigo brought out folk-pop it-kid Noah Kahan at Madison Square Garden to sing his “Stick Season”, followed the next month by a Sheryl Crow guest spot for “If It Makes You Happy” at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. On an international leg in May, Rodrigo welcomed singer-songwriter Lily Allen at London’s O2 Arena to sing the latter’s “Smile”.
