Masked Swedish psych-rock sensation Goat has returned with news of the band’s sixth studio album, simply titled Goat. Out October 11th, the eight-track collection marks the group’s third album in three years, fourth if counting its original soundtrack for the TV series The Gallows Pole.
Along with the album announcement, Goat shared the lead single “Ouroboros”. A bit of a departure for the experimental fusion group, the backbeat-driven song is groovier than recent releases and sports borderline-funk rapid guitar chords. Voluminous heavy bass surrounds the song’s sonic space amid sparing repeated vocals, and by the end, “Ouroboros” descends into droning as the distant screech of horns slowly closes in before an abrupt end. It should be noted this is a radio edit, so it’s possible the original version that closes Goat could drone on a while longer.
“The cycle of rebirth means the refinement of the soul,” the band said of the single. “An evolution in which we slowly find our direction. Our own rhythm.”
The Ouroboros is the ancient circular symbol of a snake or dragon eating its tail, thought to represent the never-ending cycle of creation and destruction. Accordingly, the endless circle of life and death carries great weight for Goat, the mysterious collective in a constant state of reinvention. As one chapter ends for the band, another begins, with this album marking “another adventure above and beyond this particular plane of reality.”
