widespread panic cancels all remaining 2024 shows

After previously canceling a number of scheduled shows in the wake of Jimmy Herring‘s cancer diagnosis, Widespread Panic has officially called off its scheduled October and November shows in Milwaukee and Savannah. This third wave of cancellations, which follows similar announcements regarding scheduled runs in Asheville, Boston, and Las Vegas, officially clears the band’s upcoming tour schedule of any confirmed engagements.

Per the announcement from the band, “The upcoming concerts scheduled for Milwaukee and Savannah have been canceled. Widespread Panic regrets having to cancel these performances but wants to give everyone enough time to adjust their plans as needed.” The note specifies for ticket-holders, “Refunds will be issued automatically at the point of purchase; there is nothing further ticketholders need to do.”

The band initially revealed Herring’s diagnosis on July 21st along with the news of the Asheville cancellation. “The Widespread Panic Family is sad to report that our Brother, Jimmy Herring, has been diagnosed with stage 1 tonsil cancer,” the Athens, GA group wrote. “He will begin treatment immediately and is expected to make a full recovery. That part we’re happy to report.”

Soon after the initial announcement, Panic sought to soothe fans’ worried souls with the release of standalone single “Blue Carousel“, which features some lyrics written by Widespread Panic’s late founding guitarist Michael Houser, who died of cancer in 2002. The song was left unfinished for two decades until keyboardist JoJo Hermann rescued it by finishing the composition for his late friend and bandmate. Hermann had previously debuted the song under the name “Love and Joy” on August 31st of last year during a solo piano show at Nashville’s City Winery.

The following day, on July 26th, the band made a new post announcing that its three-night August return to Boston and its long weekend in Las Vegas in September had been canceled, as well.

Our hearts and minds are with Jimmy Herring and the whole Widespread Panic family. We can’t wait to see you again soon.
