Slash brought his traveling S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival guitar circus to Atlanta where he honored late Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green with a cover of “Oh Well (Part One)”. The Guns N’ Roses guitarist is touring the country with a rotating lineup that features Warren Haynes Band, Keb’ Mo, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, and other cross-generational blues talents on select stops.
For Thursday’s show at Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park, the S.E.R.P.E.N.T. lineup included Larkin Poe, Robert Randolph, and ZZ Ward alongside Slash. The Atlanta stop highlighted the diversity of both the traveling festival and the current blues landscape, with softer singer-songwriter ZZ Ward, Southern rock sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe, and sacred pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph.
Slash was the great unifier bridging this stylistic summit and closed out the marathon event with a setlist celebrating blues history. With standards by Howlin’ Wolf and Robert Johnson mixed with innovators Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac, Slash showed the genre’s evolution while giving modern takes on classic songs. “Oh Well” has been a staple of Slash’s setlists through the S.E.R.P.E.N.T. tour, with singer/guitarist Tash Neal handling the iconic song from 1969’s Then Play On—the band’s last with founding guitarist Peter Green who left in 1970.
