With the main portion of summer tour 2024 now in the rearview and Mondegreen due to begin at The Woodlands in Dover, DE this week, Phish has detailed a number of surprise additions to the programming for the festival including live comedy, late-night DJ sets, and much more.

Aside from a few notable exceptions, Phish festivals have customarily been all-Phish affairs on the talent front. Mondegreen will notably expand upon that format: Following the host band’s nightly performances, various notable DJs will be on hand for late-night sets at the Heliograph, an installation at the back of the concert venue.

As the festival’s description notes, “In the back of the concert field, the towering Heliograph rises into the sky, a retro-futuristic beacon that invites you to ascend its octagonal tower for a panoramic view.” Following Phish’s Mondegreen sets, the Heliograph will come to life with late-night DJ sets by Flying Mojito Brothers (Thursday and Friday), Made Of Oak (Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso; Saturday), and DJ Questlove, also known as the drummer for The Roots, rounding out the weekend following Sunday’s finale.

Mondegreen will also feature several stand-up comics performing at the air-conditioned Leigh Fordham Hall on the festival grounds including Dave HillJordan Jensen, Gianmarco Soresi, and Rory Scovel. Set times for the Here Come The Jokers comedy series at Mondgreen will be posted on the festival’s mobile app.

Of note, Rory Scovel has spoken publicly in the past about Phish’s influence on his own writing. In a 2021 Vulture interview, the South Carolina native explained, “I’m not a huge Phish fan. I like their concerts; I like the space of their concerts, I like the vibe of their concerts. I like that their setlist is always different. I like that they’re going to go into an improvised jam that could go for 25 minutes, which I know is easy to make fun of. I know there’s a lot of people that don’t like their music, and I get it. I just happened to see them at a young enough age when I was super high, and it then got burned into my mind like Oh, this is fun. And I’ve reconfirmed many times that I still do feel that way. I’ve seen them in the middle of a jam — a song that I don’t know, and I don’t know if it’s ended and the next one started, but my eyes are closed — and I am getting so much writing done in my mind.”

Other new additions to the Mondegreen programming include a pop-up by Jon Fishman dressmaker Lisa Simpson at the Bizarre Bazaar alongside galleries by poster artist Jim Pollock and tour photographer Rene Huemer; a “Taste The Beer” craft beer-tasting area featuring a special line of Mondegreen beer by Burlington Beer including 46 Haze (New England IPA), Mexican Cousin (Mexican-style lager), and Powerful Pilsner (pilsner); and much more.

The Mondegreen campgrounds will also include a series of Camping Pods, or “communal gathering spaces in the campgrounds where you can find info, get supplies (trash/recycling bags, zip ties etc.), and [take part in] fun activities programmed by groups from the Phish fanbase. Stop by for nightly bonfires, to use communal charcoal grills, or to meet your neighbors. The Mondegreen App will have more info about your hosts and pod-specific programming over the next few days.”

Fans can also stay tuned in to the news on the ground and other Phish-related programming with the return of The Bunny, the festival’s official radio station. For the first time, The Bunny will air on SiriusXM Phish Radio (Channel 29) as well as on the LivePhish app and the Mondegreen app with hosts Tad Cautious, DJ Cooley, Rubes, Elisa, DJ JJ, Rocker Panels, Ari Fink, and DJ Rickshaw. Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro will also host “From the Archives” at various points throughout the weekend (Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET, Thursday–Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET).
