The meteoric rise of Sierra Ferrell continued on Friday with the singer-songwriter’s debut at Denver’s Mission Ballroom. Ferrell’s show at the 3,950-capacity auditorium came as the latest high-water mark for the woman whose story of redemption could have been plucked from the very Americana songs she sings. The concert arrived two days after Sierra’s Tiny Desk Concert.

Ferrell’s 22-song performance displayed the songwriting talent that brought Ferrell from the depths of addiction to the grand stage. Skipping around her nascent catalog, she gave plenty of love to her latest album Trail of Flowers from the start with the opening “I Could Drive You Crazy”. By the evening’s end, Ferrell and her band performed eight of Trail of Flowers‘ 12 songs including “Money Train”, “Rosemary”, “Lighthouse”, “Why Haven’t You Loved Me Yet”, “Fox Hunt”, “American Dreaming”, and “Dollar Bill Bar”.

But it’s not just Ferrell’s honest storytelling that has made her a rising star of country revivalism. Her striking stage appearance can grab an audience’s attention before she plays a note. On Friday, she cycled through costume changes as rhinestone-studded white cowboy boots were traded for a pair of knee-high pink leather platform boots. A feathery showgirl headdress gave the petite West Virginian at least an extra foot of height, setting off a color-coded combination of a fury bustier and sky-blue ribbon around her neck, dotted with stars throughout. Using her grandiose style of Appalchain princess attire paired with her unguarded lyricism, Ferrell is leaving her mark on the country music style in more ways than one.
