Tedeschi Trucks Band has had no shortage of stellar support on its Deuces Wild Tour, with rotating openers Little Feat and Margo Price. Last night in Philadelphia, TTB had both acts around so it was only natural to fill the stage for an all-hands-on-deck encore of the band’s Sly & The Family Stone medley.
Wednesday’s musical marathon at the TD Pavilion at the Mann began with a set of Price’s progressive country music followed by Little Feat’s time-tested classic rock staples. Longtime Little Feat vets Fred Tackett and Bill Payne couldn’t wait until the encore to join the party, so they sat in for takes on Taj Mahal‘s “Leaving Trunk” and Roland Kirk‘s “Volunteered Slavery” before Tedeschi Trucks Band finished the set on its own with “Midnight in Harlem” and “Made Up Mind”.
Returning for the encore, musicians piled onto the stage one after the other to accentuate the already-stacked 12-person TTB lineup. Tackett and Payne came back along with young Lowell George stand-in Scott Sharrard and bassist Kenny Gradney, bringing the onstage total to four electric guitars and two basses. In the back, Price grabbed a tambourine and linked up with vocalists Mike Mattison and Alecia Chakour.
With this significantly expanded lineup, it was fitting for Tedeschi Trucks Band and Friends to tackle a pair of classics from fully loaded funk legends Sly & The Family Stone. Though the stage was packed, each player found their sonic space as they dug into the groove of “Sing A Simple Song”. Susan Tedeschi and Mattison’s vocal back-and-forth gave way to solo sections from the horns, keyboards, and drums before smoothly transitioning into the classic “I Want To Take You Higher”, where guitarists Derek Trucks, Sharrard, and Tackett dug in and a full-throated run through the chorus brought the show to a close.
