Perennial jamtronic workhorse Lotus hosted its annual Summerdance Labor Day get-together in Ohio over the weekend. The enduring festival at Garrettsville’s storied Nelson Ledges Quarry Park has long been a summit showcasing the communal bond of the jam scene. During its festival-closing headlining set, Lotus put that musical brotherhood on full display by welcoming members of Dopapod to the stage for a pair of covers.

Lotus was rounding the corner of its six-set weekend commitment on Sunday when the band brought out Rob Compa during its penultimate set. While best known for his hair-raising guitar playing that combines prog-rock heaviness with jazz-inspired precision, Compa took the stage without his guitar and instead helmed lead vocals on a cover of Blur‘s “Girls & Boys”. While the rock world buzzes over the return of Oasis, Lotus and Compa made their stance on the ’90s Britpop war between the Gallaghers and Damon Albarn known at Summerdance.

After the nostalgic cover, Lotus threw it even further back with even more help from Dopapod. Bringing out keyboardist Eli Winderman to man the organ alongside Luke Miller, Lotus and Friends tackled 1970 jazz-rock crossover “Green-Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf. Winderman fit naturally beside bassist Jesse Miller, with whom he plays alongside Charlie Patierno in the organ trio Octave Cat. Dopapod and Lotus previously crossed paths back in July when the former band brought out the latter’s guitarist Tim Palmieri for a sit-in at Rock the Dock in Lake George, NY.

Watch Rob Compa of Dopapod join Lotus on Blur’s “Girls & Boys” at Summerdance. Dopapod recently announced the band would go on indefinite hiatus beginning in 2025, and at a surprise show under the name BooB in Columbus on Monday revealed it will close out the year with a two-night run at Woodlands Tavern. The band has confirmed to Live For Live Music that those concerts will be the last Dopapod shows for the foreseeable future. Find tickets and a full list of tour dates on the band’s website.
