STS9 has packed its bags and put together a playlist for its upcoming trip to Redmond, OR to headline Cascade Equinox Festival. The seminal jamtronic act will headline Saturday, September 20th when Cascade Equinox takes over the Deschutes County Fairgrounds September 19th–21st.

STS9’s Official Cascade Equinox Playlist casts a wide net befitting of the instrumental live dance band. The group celebrates early jazz with foundational releases by Miles Davis including the title track from 1958’s Milestones featuring fellow legends John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Red GarlandPaul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, plus Herbie Hancock‘s “Cantelope Island”. Sound Tribe follows its jazz muse with more contemporary selections from adjacent artists Medeski, Martin & Wood and Snarky Puppy, as well as prolific practitioners Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington.

On the other end of the playlist’s sonic spectrum is a healthy dosage of funk. STS9 nods to several iconic bassists from Miles Davis sideman Marcus Miller to Victor Wooten all the way to Thundercat. Tribe also tips its cap to fellow harbingers of the scene LettuceThe New Mastersounds, and The Greyboy Allstars.

“This playlist is a journey through the heart of jazz, funk, and fusion, blending the classics with the innovative,” STS9 said of the playlist. “It’s the perfect soundtrack as we gear up for Cascade Festival, where we’ll channel the energy and creativity of these incredible artists on stage. We can’t wait to bring this vibe to life and create something truly unforgettable with the crowd.”

In addition to tracks by heroes and contemporaries, STS9 included some of its own tracks on the playlist. The song selections highlight STS9’s live prowess with a track from 2020’s mashup project Vision Tapes, which blended live recordings into all-new mashups of fan-favorite songs. The remaining Sound Tribe songs on the playlist come from the band’s most recent release, Chromalight. This live recording captures audio of the band’s audiovisual experiment bridging light and sound at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

“The multi-sensory production set out to explore the connection between sound and light, the colors associated with musical notes and scales, and how to tap into the power of the harmony between them to create an intentional and immersive live spectacle,” the band wrote of the live production.

STS9 tops the Cascade Equinox lineup alongside other headliners JungleCloZeeLiquid Stranger, and Marc Rebillet. The second-annual electronic-leaning festival outside Bend, OR will host additional performances from Daily BreadDirtwireThe FlooziesKarina Rykman, Kitchen DwellersThe MotetNeil FrancesPoolsideSunSquabi, and many more.
