Goose closed out a three-night run in Chicago by making contact with the first standalone “(satellite)” in five years. Friday’s show at The Salt Shed marked the instrumental’s third performance overall and first appearance since April 18th, 2019 at The Mercury Lounge in New York City.

Found on Goose’s 2021 sophomore studio album Shenanigans Nite Club, “(satellite)” is an instrumental addendum tacked onto the end of the band’s trademark “So Ready”. On Friday, however, “(satellite)” was launched into orbit on its own in the second set, coming out of an unfinished “Dripfield”. The instrumental continued the preceding jam’s momentum, as drummer Cotter Ellis kept his foot on the gas and—along with bassist Trevor Weekz—provided a platform for guitarist Rick Mitarotonda to fire off frenetic leads of growing intensity. Out of the crescendoing improvisation, the band found its way to a nostalgic cover of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band‘s “Hollywood Nights” before “Give it Time” closed the second set.

Though “(satellite)” has been around since 2018, and its partner “So Ready” since 2015, Saturday’s show placed a heavy emphasis on new Goose compositions. Of the song-heavy 13-song performance, five of the 11 originals were debuted this year. “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet”, “Give it Time”, and the relevant “Zalt” were introduced alongside new drummer Cotter Ellis during a run at The Capitol Theatre in April. The remaining “One in, One Out” and “Big Modern!” were added to the songbook on the band’s current fall tour.
