janes addiction cancels remaining reunion tour dates decides to take some time away after onstage fight

Three days after Perry Farrell tried to fight Dave Navarro onstage in BostonJane’s Addiction has canceled its remaining tour dates. In a post to the band’s social media, Jane’s Addiction wrote, “The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group.” This truncated outing marked the first tour by the band’s “core four” members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins in 14 years.

Jane’s Addiction had not performed since the tumultuous Friday night concert at Leader Bank Pavilion where singer Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro in the middle of “Ocean Size”. Bassist Eric Avery along with some crew members broke up the scuffle and escorted Farrell offstage, with the rest of the band taking their bows and ending the show after 11 songs. Jane’s Addiction was due to perform on Sunday in Bridgeport, CT but canceled the show in light of Friday’s events.

Navarro went into greater detail on the band’s immediate hiatus in a post of his own. After posting a cryptic photo of himself with the caption “Goodnight…” in the aftermath of the onstage altercation, he followed the band’s official announcement with a statement noting, “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour.”

“Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative,” Navarro continued in a statement attributed to him, Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins. “We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken.”

Onstage tensions were building in Jane’s Addiction prior to Friday’s meltdown in Boston. During the preceding two-night run in New York City, Farrell’s bandmates showed their visible disdain as the singer missed vocal cues and sang out of key. In the aftermath of the brawl, Perry’s wife Etty Lau Farrell explained that the singer had been suffering from tinnitus and a soar throat on the tour, and was upset because he felt the band was playing too loud and drowning out his vocals.

“Perry’s frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band,” Etty wrote on Instagram. “But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.”

In a statement shared on Monday following the band’s announcement, Perry said, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

Refunds for Jane’s Addiction ticketholders will be issued from the point of purchase. Those who bought tickets from a third-party reseller (StubHub, SeatGeek, etc.) should contact the site directly.
