Jack White and Greta Van Fleet were the men of the hour on Sunday, September 29th at Soundside Music Festival after stepping in as interim headliners. Foo Fighters were originally due to close out the festival formerly known as Sound on Sound in Bridgeport, CT, but backed out of the event shortly after Dave Grohl revealed he had fathered a daughter outside his marriage.
Foo Fighters weren’t the only substitution at Soundside Music Festival, as Queens of the Stone Age canceled their appearance months ago when frontman Josh Homme had to undergo emergency surgery. Production whizkid Jack Anatoff‘s band Bleachers were called in as replacements, bringing their From the Studio to the Stage Tour to Soundside complete with recording studio stage decorations.
Other than those high-profile adjustments, the third-annual festival at Seaside Park went off without incident. Day one on Saturday, September 28th brought top acts Noah Kahan, Goo Goo Dolls, Fleet Foxes, Boyz II Men, and Grace Potter to coastal Connecticut, where they all performed on a single stage with no overlapping sets. On Sunday, daytime sets by rising neo-folkie Gregory Alan Isakov, Grammy-winning pianist Norah Jones, and genre rebel Teddy Swims warmed up the early fall crowd. After Bleachers subbed in for Queens of the Stone Age, Greta Van Fleet and Jack White split the final headlining time slot to close out the festival.
Jack White has carved out a niche in 2024 as a stand-in festival headliner. After QOTSA canceled several European festival appearances, the White Stripes guitarist jumped in as a replacement. With a surprise new album, appropriately titled No Name, behind him, the singer/songwriter/record label president has since embarked on a sporadic North American tour. Never announced in the traditional sense, White’s tour sees him performing intimate underplays revealed days in advance.
“People keep saying that these are ‘Pop up shows’ we’ve been playing,” White wrote on Instagram in August, “well, you can call them whatever you want, but we are on tour right now. These are the ‘shows.’”
