Hot on the heels of her Australian tour supporting Grammy-nominated, Platinum-selling UK sensation Jorja Smith, Beckah Amani has announced her debut album! The Burundian-Australian singer-songwriter’s anticipated debut LP, dubbed This is how I remember it., will reach our ears on Friday, 6th December.

To coincide with the announcement, Amani has also shared a fresh cut of the record dubbed ‘Free Fall’. An empowering anthem that intertwines cinematic soundscapes with heartfelt storytelling, ‘Free Fall’ was produced by the legendary M-Phazes (Kehlani, Remi Wolf, Ruel) and co-written by Brook Toia and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Spencer Stewart (Laufey, d4vd, Twenty One Pilots).

Beckah Amani – ‘Free Fall’

“‘Free Fall was a song I had to write,” Amani explains in a press statement. “It’s not a song I had to think hard about or try hard to get to. The melody and lyrics flowed out of me in a freestyle, and in 3 hours the freestyle was structured, re-written and shaped into what the song is now.”

She continues: “It took me from a creatively familiar place on the Gold Coast, to a new creative space in LA – for the first time – where I finished the production with M-Phazes. Although I hadn’t intended it, the lyrics of ‘Free Fall’ captured this phase of change in my life so beautifully and wrapped me in so much comfort and contentment.”

Lyrically, the song applauds the courage to release control and trust in the path ahead.

“I sonically wanted to capture the chaotic but wonderful and freeing moment when you decide to let go and dive into something new, trusting that you will land where you are meant to be,” Amani explains. “I wanted it to feel like both falling without a parachute and flying with a pair of new wings.”

All the songs on Amani’s debut LP – including ‘Free Fall’ and previous singles ‘Sober’ and ‘Superstar’ -are tied together by a central concept.

“The album narrative centres around conversations between two people who are in a relationship that’s falling apart,” Amani adds. “I think to be loved is to be seen. Being seen for who you are unfiltered and unedited however is both comforting and confronting at the same time. Through a series of memories and reflections, I wanted these conversations between these two people to explore how insecurities, how we see the world and past experiences, affect trust in a relationship, ultimately accepting that someone can love us for who we are. Overall, the narrative of the album serves to open a dialogue about the experiences and personal inferences that make it hard for us as people to give and receive love and do healthy relationships well.”
